Saw a story in the Mercury News this morning covering the visit by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mike Leavitt, to San Jose. His point was that all medical records should be on-line. Not too long ago ('99?), I was on a panel at a conference for IT professionals in Healthcare and got a rude response to my suggestion that it is obvious that we needed a common identity system for medical patients as a starting point. At that time it was general knowlege (to everyone but me) that there was no political will at all for a common ID. Privacy issues etc. "dead on arrival" was the comment. Our current problems with identity theft notwithstanding, it is a long overdue idea that will help keep healthcare costs under control.
